Juniper Publishers- Journal of cell Science Free living amoebae (FLA) are opportunistic protozoa which are widely spread in our environment. Among these, three genera Acanthamoeba, Balamuthia and Naegleria are responsible for life threatening human brain infections involving central nervous system (CNS) with poor diagnosis. This is also contributed to poor understanding of the pathogenicity of FLA and limited availability of therapeutic options against them. The purpose of this review is to document the medicinal plants used against free living amoeba and critically review the literature on the anti-FLA properties of folk plants against emerging FLA infections. Genetic factors, microbial pathogens, the alteration of the normal microbial flora and/or of the micro biome have been implicated to the etiology of the specific category of diseases but their interaction is so complex that the distinction of the causal from those that are incidental becomes extremely difficult.
